"So, Boss, you wound the engine?" Havoc grinned at Ed proudly. Ed had wanted to go into town to get himself some new alchemy texts that had just been imported from Creta, and Havoc had decided it was time for Ed to learn to drive. Better that than the vague anger he always seemed to get when he thought he was dependant on someone else's abilities.
Ed glared at Havoc with the deeply offended expression of one who hadn't expected a driving lesson to include difficult physical labour. "Why do we have to crank the damn engine anyway? They should make better engines that turn over on their own."
Havoc chuckled. "That won't happen, Boss, it'd be a waste of resources. Now, if you'll get in the car."
Ed got in. After a moment, he got very very silent.
Not noticing, Havoc continued. "Okay, you have two three pedals down at the bottom, the gas, the break, and the clutch. The gas is to go, the break is to stop, and the clutch is to shift gears."
"Gears?" Ed's voice was flat and unamused.
"Engine speeds. Once it's going, it can switch speeds to get you the maximum output while not wasting any--" Havoc looked at Ed and how Ed could, quite clearly, not see over the dashboard. "...ah."
Teeth gritted, Ed smiled rather unpleasantly at Havoc. "I don't see how this is going to be relevant."
"Well, ah... er." Havoc glanced aside, as if the large post the car was parked beside would hold a secret to surviving this. "I suppose we can put the lessons aside until something can get worked out with your--" Don't say 'stature', he told himself, desperately. "...um, until later."
"I think that might be a good idea."
"Yes, boss."
Ed's teeth were pearly white in his face. "So, now you're going to make up for this by driving me into town."
"...Yes, boss."
